An Introduction to the
Inductive Bible Study Method

The Precept Inductive Study Seminar introduces men and women to the basics of inductive study, teaching them how to ask basic questions of the text of Scripture . . . What does the text say? What does the text mean? Based on that, how can I apply this to my life?

In the seminar, which is very interactive, we discuss the importance of using the Bible itself as our primary source for study, and the fact that the goal of all Bible study is not simply knowledge, but transformed lives.

We’ll discuss concepts such as context, marking key words, asking questions of the text, and identifying chapter themes. Students will get to try the skills for themselves as we work through the first ten verses of I Thessalonians together in class.

The Basics of the Inductive Study Method:
Inductive study draws you into personal interaction with the Bible. Before seeking insights from commentaries or Bible scholars, you go straight to the Word itself. The Word of God then becomes the plumb line, the standard of truth, to measure all you believe and all you do. The result is a life changed by the power of the Holy Spirit. The more you delve into the Word of God and adjust your thinking and behavior to its precepts for life, the more you are transformed into the likeness of Jesus Christ––the Savior of the world and coming King of kings.

OBSERVATION–– We begin by giving you some tools to help you carefully observe the text to discover exactly what God is saying. Specially designed for busy lives in an age of speed, noise, and endless distractions, this unique study method will help you slow down to focus on God’s Word so you don’t miss anything it’s teaching us.

INTERPRETATION–– Careful observation enables us to discover what the text means in its context. Since Scripture is the best interpreter of Scripture, the more accurate your observation and interpretation, the greater your understanding of God’s Word will be.

APPLICATION––Observation and interpretation lead us to apply what we’ve learned and live the life God intended. Although the Bible is an ancient book, written over centuries, it’s God’s eternal Word––truth that transforms us when we live by it. Believers of every age can know God and discover everything they need to live life to the fullest––in ways that are pleasing to Him!
